Advair

Advair is a combination prescription drug that is used in the treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Advair is labeled a combination prescription drug because it is produced from a combination of two other drugs: fluticasone propionate and salmeterol.

Approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2000, Advair is manufactured and distributed by GlaxoSmithKline, the world's second largest pharmaceutical company.

Advair Side Effects

Advair is an effective drug in the treatment of asthma and COPD, though it has been linked with a variety of side effects. Some of the more common Advair side effects can include ear, nose, throat or stomach irritation, head or muscle aches, and respiratory symptoms.

There are a number of serious Advair side effects that often require medical attention. Patients who develop skin irritation in the form of hives or a rash, patients who experience generalized swelling and patients who experience extreme asthmatic bouts should contact their doctor immediately.

Advair Deaths

Advair has been linked with a number of cases of fatal asthmatic episodes. Although incidences of the severe side effect are relatively rare, the increased risk has warranted the application of the infamous FDA black box label. Prior to the revision of the warning label, consumers were not made aware of the risk of suffering a fatal asthmatic attack as a result of using Advair and other salmeterol based drugs. The failure to place a proper label warning was negligent on the part of GlaxoSmithKline. This company may be liable for some of the injuries and deaths caused by their products.

Advair users are advised to strictly adhere to the dosage guidelines, avoiding using the drug more than two times each day (approximately 12 hours apart).

Advair Lawsuits

If you or a loved one has been injured as a result of using Advair, then you may be eligible for compensation. It is the responsibility of GlaxoSmithKline to take steps to protect those who use their drugs. Advair and Salmeterol

Salmeterol is a type of drug that is used in the treatment of severe cases of asthma and COPD. Salmeterol has been linked with a number of deaths and serious injuries, and has been at the center of recent steps taken by the FDA to ensure that Advair and Serevent (both of which contain salmeterol) users are fully aware of any potential side effects caused by the drug.

In 2005, the FDA requested that Advair and Serevent labels be revised after studies highlighted the serious health risks associated with salmeterol. The drugs now boast the strongest FDA warning label available, the "black box label." The FDA suggests that both Advair and Serevent be used in the treatment of asthma or COPD only when in concert with a doctor's recommendation after other medications have proven ineffective.

Advair and Asthma

Advair is primarily intended for use in combating the symptoms associated with asthma, a chronic respiratory condition affecting tens of millions of people around the world. The two main components of asthma are constriction of the airways and inflammation of the lung tissue; both of which can hamper normal breathing. If left untreated, asthmatic symptoms can lead to long-term lung impairment.

Common asthma attack symptoms can include wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath and a feeling of tightness in the chest. Advair treatments have demonstrated an ability to reduce inflammation of the lung tissue and ease constriction of the airways.

Although the Advair inhaler is not intended to serve as a short-term solution for asthmatic problems, the bronchodilator typically takes effect within 30 to 60 minutes following inhalation.
