The diabetes drug Avandia should be pulled from the market due to increased risks of heart attack, according to Food and Drug Administration (FDA) scientist Dr. David Graham.
The increased risks of heart attack combined with “no unique short-term benefits” in helping diabetic patients control their blood-sugar levels may prove Avandia should be pulled from the market.
Dr. Graham distributed a copy of a slide presentation during a daylong meeting of outside experts convened to discuss whether Avandia should be restricted to use in select patients and branded with warnings or if Avandia should be removed from sale completely.
An estimated 1 million Americans with Type 2 diabetes use Avandia to help control blood sugar levels by increasing the body’s sensitivity to insulin. This type of treatment has been presumed to decrease the heart risks associated with diabetes. However, Avandia could potentially increase heart attack risks, which would seriously limit the drug’s benefits, according to the FDA.
