Prior to that, from 1979-1998, Mr. Smith handled civil and criminal trials in state and federal courts, and cases involving medical malpractice, personal injury, criminal defense, and Federal Tort Claims. In 1989 Mr. Smith obtained a $1.25 million medical malpractice verdict. Other representative matters include: swimming pool drowning (E.D.Va. 1996) (confidential settlement), HIV-contaminated blood (DC 1995) (confidential settlement), vaccine injury (E.D.Va. 1995) (confidential settlement), $125,000 jury verdict in slip-and-fall case (Fairfax County 1994), $100,000 medical malpractice judgment against Bureau of Prisons (D.C. 1993), auto accident verdict $280,000 (E.D.Va. 1984).
