Study: Decline in Hormone Replacement Drug Therapy Results in Decreased Breast Cancer Rates

A decline in the use of prescription hormone replacement drugs in 2002 may explain the decrease in the number of breast cancer cases in the last several years, a University of California study reveals.

The study also suggests that women who stop using hormone replacement drugs, including Wyeth’s Prempro and Premarin and Pfizer’s Provera, may be able to quickly reduce their risks of developing breast cancer, researchers said. The study is published online in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

Millions of menopausal women stopped taking hormone replacement drugs after a study linked Prempro to cancer and heart disease. Hormone replacement drugs are used to treat hot flashes, night sweats, and other menopausal symptoms. Hormone drugs contain estrogen, which is implicated in breast cancer risk.

The study also found that rates of cancer cases fell 13 percent per year between 2001 and 2003, while overall breast cancer rates fell 5 percent.

Hormone replacement drugs have long been linked to causing breast cancer and heart disease. The attorneys of the Law of Office of Justice Lawyers remain committed to seeking justice for those who have been injured by these drugs, including Provera, Premarin, and Prempro.
